Welcome to our Primrose School!
My name is Amber Lempke and I am the proud owner of the Primrose School of Yorktown.
As parents, my husband Michael and I understand how difficult it can be to find both a safe and educational environment that would provide the exceptional level of care we expect for our most precious gifts. I am beyond excited to be a part of the Primrose family and to share this amazing school with the Yorktown and surrounding Hampton Roads communities. As our children were growing up, we struggled to find quality childcare for them as we moved to new locations, which ultimately led to us hiring live-in au pairs during their childhood to support our family. We are also keenly aware that so many early childcare centers closed during the pandemic, and have not reopened, creating a significant deficit in childcare in Hampton Roads to support local families and our military community. As we looked for ways to support the community and provide a quality resource to working parents, Primrose stood out from all the rest. I immediately recognized the excellence incorporated into the curriculum, the focus on character development and the partnerships formed with parents.
Prior to becoming Primrose owners, Michael and I both served in the U.S. Navy, and went on to continue in service with the federal government in the Northern VA area. My background is in human resources and talent management, having served previously as the Chief Human Capital Officer for the U.S. Census Bureau, and more recently working as the Chief Development Officer for a local defense contractor in Newport News. We have lived in Yorktown since 2019, and our two children, Victoria, and Parker, are graduates of or attending Grafton High School. As a family, we enjoy all that this small coastal and historical community has to offer. Our goal is to provide an experience for the families in Yorktown and the surrounding cities that is unmatched in quality and enrichment, in order to make Yorktown an exceptional place to live and raise families.
We truly believe that what we do matters. Our philosophy is based on the Primrose simple, yet powerful phrase: “We believe who children become is as important as what they know”. Our exclusive early learning approach balances purposeful play with nurturing guidance from teachers to encourage curiosity, creativity, confidence, and compassion. We deliver more than a curriculum; it’s a life-changing early learning experience for children and their families. We are so excited to be opening our own Primrose School in order to give others this opportunity.

Are all staff members background-checked and CPR/first-aid certified?
Yes. Every Primrose staff member undergoes a thorough background check before joining our school. All staff are also CPR and first–aid certified, so you can feel confident your child is in safe, prepared hands every day.
What curriculum or educational philosophy do you follow?
Our school uses the proprietary Primrose Schools Balanced Learning® curriculum, which is research-informed and designed to nurture the whole child — intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically. We believe in balancing teacher-guided learning with purposeful play to build a strong foundation for the future.
How do you support school readiness and the transition to kindergarten?
All of our programs are designed in age-appropriate ways to prepare children for kindergarten and beyond. We focus on early literacy and numeracy as well as social-emotional skill development — so children arrive at kindergarten confident and ready to thrive. 96% of Primrose Schools Pre-K students met ASQ benchmarks for problem solving.*

We are open Monday through Friday from 7:00 am-6:00 pm.
