Amanda and Mark Kienbaum

FRANCHISE OWNER

Meet Amanda and Mark Kienbaum, parents to three young girls and proud Franchise Owners of Primrose School of Middleton. Longtime supporters of Primrose Schools, the Kienbaums are thrilled to bring the quality experience they know and love to the children and families of Middleton.

Amanda was first introduced to Primrose Schools in 2006 when she accepted a director position at a Primrose school in Minnesota. She previously worked in children’s services, so she immediately warmed to the nurturing environment she observed at the school. Impressed and inspired by the Primrose commitment to serve each individual child and family, Amanda knew right away that she’d found the perfect fit — both for her career and for the care of her own children in the future.

“What I love most about Primrose is we’re all truly focused on the child,” said Amanda. “The Balanced Learning® approach is unparalleled and its focus on character development helps each child set the foundation she needs for success. But the piece that has always stood out the most to me is the investment in each individual child and family.”

Mark, too, has a past with Primrose Schools that began before the Kienbaums started exploring their options as Franchise Owners. In fact, Primrose is tied into the couple’s love story — they met through a colleague of Amanda while she was in her director position.

“Back when Amanda and I met and she first introduced me to Primrose, I told her if I had kids, I would send them to Primrose right then and there,” Mark said. “That’s how strongly I felt about the brand from the very start.”

For the Kienbaums, opening Primrose School of Middleton is a dream come true. They’re eager to bring Primrose to families in a community where they saw a distinct need for a premier, quality early education and care provider. Their own daughters, Myra, Eden and Emery, attend/have attended the school.

Amanda, who graduated from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities with a degree in child psychology, will bring her passion for serving children with years of experience in child education to the school. Mark will provide his expertise in marketing and finance to support the behind-the-scenes operations. A business graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, he grew up in Southern Wisconsin and has always believed Middleton is the perfect location to open a Primrose school.

“Not only is this area home to one of the best school districts in the state, but it’s also a thriving business center,” said Mark. “Now, many commuting parents can have peace of mind knowing there is a premier child care option close to where they work that will fully prepare their children for success in school and life.”

Amanda and Mark enjoy offering Middleton families a loving, warm atmosphere where their children can grow Active Minds, Healthy Bodies and Happy Hearts®. As Franchise Owners, their goal is to provide parents with an environment where they can feel good about leaving their children, knowing their little ones are receiving the best quality of care.

Opened in August 2016, Primrose School of Middleton features the Balanced Learning curriculum in Infant through Private Pre-Kindergarten classrooms and the Primrose Explorers after-school and summer program for students through age 12. Developed and taught exclusively at Primrose Schools, the research-informed curriculum blends purposeful play with nurturing guidance to encourage curiosity, confidence and compassion.

Primrose School of Middleton is located at 3000 Deming Way. For more information, visit www.PrimroseMiddleton.com.

You may have noticed that Marvin has been spending some extra time in the school as he has added on several (and VERY helpful) job duties to make our school great! Marvin just celebrated his one year anniversary. Bringing Marvin to Primrose has really allowed our school to become more green. Before Marvin began, we were using disposable plates daily. While we teach children conservation for the month of April, we felt that it was time for us to do our part and began using the plates and silverware we do today. This would not have happened without him! Marvin has enjoyed working with the school so much, that he decided to make this job full-time and has taken on maintenance, extra cleaning and helps with pick-up to help Leadership a few days a week. Marvin, thank you so much for all your hard work and dedication to Primrose School of Middleton. We appreciate all the things you do to make our school safe, healthy and happy!

As our school continues to grow with children, Ryan will settle into one of the Pre-Kindergarten classrooms as his main classroom. Mr. Train comes into the school every morning with what sounds like a cheery smile (darn masks!) and is ready to take on whatever is happening for the day. His flexibility is always appreciated and willing to do whatever is necessary to make our school successful. He also embraces making connections with students whether it be out of the playground or playing with them during Children's Choice Center Time. The month of November is all about generosity! Benjamin the Bear helps teach our students about what it means to be generous. We support this learning with events such as our Caring and Giving Food Drive to support Middleton Outreach Ministry. Well today (in any other year) would have been our largest Grandparent event of the year to bake pies to sell for donations to MOM. Families would have come together to enjoy at our Thanksgiving feast and pie... but 2020! So today our leadership team baked pies and tomorrow families will enjoy these pies along with their Thanksgiving Feast To Go! Check back tomorrow to see the awesome feast Chef Nick had prepared! • Red Shoe Award

Help us win the Red Shoe Award and help keep families close to their loved ones!!! Help raise critical funds for RMHC-Madison and help our team lower its score and win the Red Shoe Award! The Golf Classic is RMHC-Madison’s largest annual fundraiser and provides critical funds to serve guest families. For every $100 donated our score goes down by one stroke. At RMHC $100 goes a long way! It can help provide an overnight stay for a family with a sick child, dinner for guest families, or more than a week of lunches through the Augie's Lunches with Love program. Help us raise funds for families and lower our score through 2:30 pm on October 5, 2020.

  • March 2020: Family of the Month

"The Cairns Family moved to Wisconsin a little over a year ago. Steve grew up in northern New Jersey and Jen grew up here, in the Madison area. Steve and Jen met after college, while living in New York City. They found that they had a lot in common, especially their passion for sports. Jen played college soccer and Steve played college football. Although they enjoy a lot of the same things, they remain a divided house every fall when the football season comes around. Go Packers! Go Giants! After living in NYC together for a few years, Steve and Jen moved to Hoboken, NJ to start a family. Along came their two children. In search of more space and ready to move on from city life, Steve and Jen decided to move to Wisconsin for job opportunities and to be closer to family. Steve is a Financial Advisor and Jen is the owner of Soccer Shots Madison. Both of their children attend Primrose. Their son is 5 years old and he loves sports, playing games, and looks forward to playing with his Primrose friends every day. Their daughter is 3 years old and loves princesses, cheese, and wants to be a Primrose teacher one day. As a family they like staying active, being outside, traveling and going out to dinner with their extended family. Both kids like to draw pictures for their teachers and friends, and each weekend they love looking at the Primrose calendar to see all the fun activities that are planned for the week ahead. They also both rave about Chef Nick and wonder what he’s going to cook next. Steve and Jen are so thankful for all of the amazing Primrose teachers and the positive impact they have on their children. They are so grateful for the entire Primrose staff! Thank you for the wonderful experience!"

  • February 2020 Family of the Month

Congratulations to the Murphy family for being our February Family of the Month! "The Murphy family currently consists of our four-year-old daughter, Lee (mom), Mike (dad) and two pugs, Finnegan and Violet, and we are excited for the expected arrival of a baby girl in April! Mom and Dad are both accountants, which makes for great dinner table conversation.😊 Weather permitting, we can typically be found outside walking our two pups or at a local park. We also enjoy relaxing at the end of long week, enjoying coffee or tea from Moka, and going out to dinner. Our daughter has been with Primrose since the summer of 2017 and we could not be more thankful for the experience. It is safe to say our daughter tends to be “cautious” in certain situations and it has been incredible to see her confidence grow throughout her time at Primrose. Part of dinner conversation (the non-accounting part) is talking about her day at “school,” which always starts with how she had fun with her teachers and friends. Our daughter loves the colors pink, yellow and blue. She enjoys coloring, playing with friends, eating pretzels and applesauce, reading stories and playing games. Her favorite Primrose character is Erwin the dog! Thank you, Primrose, and to all of the teachers that have so positively impacted our daughter throughout the years!"

  • Book Drive Kick Off

We are welcoming in the month of February by kicking off our annual book drive! We will be collecting new and gently used books to be donated at the end of the month!

  • January 2020 Apple of Our Eye

Congratulations to our January Apple of our Eye, Ms. Courtney Bruhn. Ms. Bruhn has been a part of our Primrose family since May 2019. She began in our Wonder Program, teaching in our Toddler classroom. Having a passion to teach preschool aged students, she stepped into our Venture Program as one of our Preschool teachers when the opportunity arose! Ms. Bruhn has been a wonderful addition to our team, choosing JOY each day and truly delivering the WOW to her students and families. We love seeing her implement curriculum, going above and beyond to help each child learn and grow. Her nurturing personality also provides comfort to all our students. When Ms. Bruhn is not teaching, she loves exercising, swimming, being with friends and family, and enjoying the outdoors! Enjoy your trip with your family this week, Ms. Bruhn. We were so happy to celebrate you this month. Congratulations!

Congratulations to our first Family of the Month for 2020 - the Garbuz Family! "We are the Garbuz family! Maya is a social worker and Alex is a programmer. We have two children; our daughter attending Primrose and our son is in 7th grade. We speak Russian at home and love reading Russian books. We also enjoy playing board games, watching big brother play hockey and watching movies together. We have been with Primrose since February 2017. We love that every time our daughter walks into the building she breathes in the air and comments on how tasty it smells and tries to guess what kind of breakfast will be served. She gets really happy when she gets a Happy Gram from her teachers and makes us read it to her a few times. When something interesting happens at home she can't wait to tell her teachers and friends at school. Thank you for the wonderful experience!"

  • Family of the Month

We are celebrating the Albano family in November! Congratulations on being our Family of the Month! Nick and Elizabeth moved to Madison from New York City in 2015 to start a new chapter of their lives. Not long after arriving in Madison were they engaged then married in 2017. Already loving Madison, they were thrilled when they learned that their family would be expanding. As first time parents to be, Nick and Elizabeth dove head first into finding a place to care for their son that they would trust wholeheartedly and that he would love going to each and every day. They found all of this and more at Primrose School of Middleton. Their son is now in the Young Toddler program. As a family, the Albanos enjoy being outside, going for long walks, hosting family visits and making home cooked meals. While their son doesn't help much with the cooking, he has taken his job of tasting and eating very seriously! His favorite is homemade pasta and sauce. He's an honest critic. Nick and Elizabeth love all of the available activities that Madison has to offer including concerts on the square, the farmer's market and hiking trails. They even play on a volleyball team together!

October seemed to sneak by with the start of fall! Apples, pumpkins, costumes, and snow 😳❄️❄️❄️, but before we officially say goodbye to October, we want to congratulate our Apple of the Eye! Mrs. Divya Singh joined our Primrose family this past summer. Not only did she join as a lead teacher in our Early Preschool program, but also as a parent, trusting us with the education and care of her two children! Since day one, Mrs. Singh has brought with her a positive, infectious passion for children! She approaches each day with joy, sharing her smile and excitement with our entire team. She has a curiosity to learn and a drive to build trusted relationships, not just with with students and families, but also with her co-teachers. Congratulations to our Family of the Month, the Westphal family! We are so grateful to have you as a part of our Primrose Family! "We grew up outside of Madison (Wauwatosa for Megan and Columbus,WI for Christopher) and met each other through a church small group ugly sweater party. There's some pretty funny details that accompany the story of our lives before our daughter yet we'll save those for a different time. We have a dog named Blanco and enjoy being outside, laughing and exploring new activities around Madison. When we were looking for care facilities we visited many and Primrose was the only facility that we both agreed on, seriously. We loved the personality and sincere welcoming atmosphere and found the center inviting and somewhere that would keep our child safe while encouraging active growth. We treasured the fact that a strong emphasis was placed on healthy living and wellness- including the meals that are provided. Our daughter enjoys coming to school and has made connections with all her teachers. She's got a wild and joyful spirit that each teacher has embraced, encouraged, laughed, loved and applied just the right amount of discipline. Primrose helps keep mom and dad sane and Primrose keeps our little one learning. We love it here- there's no place we'd rather be!"

  • May 2019: Family of the Month

Congratulations to our Family of the Month, the Foxen family! We are so happy to have you as a part of the Primrose family! "Both Jeremy and I grew up in Mt. Horeb, WI, going to school together starting in Kindergarten! While we officially met in school we didn’t get married until 2010 and waited to start our family four years later. Our family took a short leave of absence from Wisconsin for my career and 2 years later, last April, headed back to WI for Jeremy’s job. Luckily I am able to work remote 3 days a week and venture to Illinois only 2 days a week. It works but keeps us on our toes, constantly adjusting schedules. We landed a home in the country with some land in Black Earth and we love to explore the woods together as a family. We spend a lot of time outside, especially now that the weather permits. In fact, our two children are pretty hard to convince to come inside. Our son enjoys going on ‘a bear hunt’ in the woods, playing with his action figures, and hot wheels to name a few. Our daughter loves to read, play with her dolls, draw and keep up with her brother running around outside. We are blessed with lots of family living very close, including an abundance of grandparents for the both of them. The last year we have been renovating our kitchen & living room space at our new home, and have made a point to make every phase an adventure for the kids. Every box becomes a fort, or house and it is always a fun scavenger hunt to find what we need."

  • Family of the Month April 2019

Congratulations to our April Family of the Month, the English Family! We are so glad you are here! The Englishes are quite the international family. Laetitia is from France and Paul is from Ireland. They met over 10 years ago in Alcatraz while on vacation in California. Laetitia was living in London, UK at the time and Paul in Dublin, Ireland. They relocated to Madison 6 years ago from Ireland and welcomed their son into their lives 3 years ago, on December 5th. Outside of work and parenthood duties, Paul and Laetitia love travelling around the world whenever they can… so true to themselves, they kept going as an extended family and took their son on his first flight at 3 months-old. He is now literally obsessed with planes and is always asking for his next adventure, as can vouch the entire school when he is about to go on one. He also loves playing soccer with daddy, baking with mommy, playing with legos and trains and planes and cars… and reading books in French as well as in English. Their little family joined Primrose when their son turned 1 and they have never looked back! From day one he has blossomed and his happiness for going to school and see his friends every single day just speaks volumes about what a wonderful place Primrose is!

"Earlier this year, our family became a part of the Middleton Primrose Family. We relocated from Illinois, where our daughter was attending a Primrose in the Southwest Chicago suburbs. Prior to Illinois, we had been living in St. Paul, MN. Abby is a small animal veterinary internist, and her training has moved her family around quite a bit. Matt has recently made a career change and is finally pursuing his dream of brewing beer professionally. Matt is the assistant brewer at Great Dane Brew Pub downtown. Matt and Abby love all things beer! We met in college and have traveled all over the country and world (Ireland, Belgium) to try great beer. Aside from traveling, the Bongard family enjoys spending time at home with our four-legged family members, Daisy, our cat and Westy, our Greyhound. We are excited to be putting down roots in Madison!"

  • Family of the Month - November 2018

At the Primrose School of Middleton, we are a family. We strive to build a community for our children to thrive in. Each month we choose one family to be the Family of the Month. We do this to introduce different families throughout the school giving families the opportunity to meet others. This September, our plan was to kick off the year, introducing you to the Kienbaum family. While we know they own the school and have girls in the school, you may not know more than that. Then the floods came, and things got shuffled and hard. But we are back, and it’s November, a month for giving thanks. So, we introduce you to the Kienbaum family, the Family of the Month for November. And the Kienbaums want to start with giving thanks. Thank you to all our families, to our amazing teachers, staff and Leadership. Thank you to the community. Thank you to everyone that had a part in keeping the “doors” open and getting us back home. As a family, the Kienbaums enjoy adventures, and with three young girls, even a trip to the grocery store can be an adventure. They enjoy going to the Dane County Farmers Market, water parks, playgrounds, camping with grandparents, and partaking in all things festive and seasonal. The Kienbaums love to travel and have many destinations on the bucket list. Myra would love to go to Hawaii. Eden wants to check out ToyStory Land at Disney World. Amanda and Mark enjoy trips to Chicago. And they all enjoy trips to Janesville and Nebraska to visit family. Before opening the Primrose School of Middleton, Mark and Amanda traveled a variety of career paths. While most of Amanda’s experience is in child care and early childhood education, she did complete her Peace Officer Education and Tacitical training to become a police officer in Minnesota. While she was never a sworn officer, she spent time working for a police department as a community service officer. Mark has spent his post college year working in print, sales, and corporate marketing. Amanda and Mark met through Primrose in Eden Prairie, MN where Amanda was the director for three years and Mark was Percy twice! Myra loves to arrange parties, set up shows and dances, and play school with her sisters. When Eden grows up, she says she wants to be a fire fighter! Although she’s only had two, Emery says her favorite holiday is Christmas! Our favorite Primrose Friend is Percy and we have plenty of “Percys” around to show for it!

Our Caring and Giving Food Drive helps our children learn about generosity and how to be kind towards one another as a way of life, without expectation or reward.

  • July 2018 Family of the Month

Meet July’s Family of the Month, the Golden family! This wonderful family has been with us since the very beginning and we are so blessed to have their two daughters with us each day! Matt and Kellye live on the West Side of Madison and are blessed to have a lot of family in town. They have two daughters who have nine cousins they love playing with. The girls get to spend their days at Primrose with two of them, who live only a block away! Every summer they rent a lake house on the Golden side of the family and all the cousins have the time of their life swimming, boating, playing with each other and staying up way too late. They also have all four grandparents in town. Most Saturdays, Matt spoils the family with an early morning run to Millers and Sons for their delicious donuts and then after gymnastics they all head downtown to the Farmer’s Market, go to the pool, or meet up with friends for some fun activity. They love traveling as a family whether it be to Chicago, a weekend up North, or a bit further and a plane ride away. “We feel so lucky that the kids are spending their days at a school like Primrose while we are working. I love that they are learning new things every day while also playing, and being given lots of hugs and affection. The teachers at Primrose all take time to really know their kids and are true professionals. We love that there is such a strong sense of community between the Primrose teachers and families too.” - Kellye G. Thank you Golden family for your partnership and support every day!
