Welcome to the Primrose School of Lincoln at Wilderness Hills!
Meet Dr. Betsy Tonniges, proud Franchise Owner and operator of Primrose School of Lincoln at Wilderness Hills. Betsy has a passion for childhood development and is excited to bring the Primrose Experience of the premier early childhood education and care to families in Lincoln.
Betsy shares the Primrose belief that who children become is just as important as what they know. Immediately upon stepping into a Primrose school, Betsy was drawn to the research based Balanced Learning™ approach incorporating purposeful play and nurturing guidance from teachers to encourage curiosity, creativity, collaboration, confidence and compassion. When asked about the Primrose Experience Betsy explains, “The Primrose Balanced Learning™ approach focuses on developmentally appropriate academics that are inquisitive and hands-on in nature, there is also optimal time throughout the day for children to make choices about their learning.”
Betsy and her husband, Jesse, are the proud parents of two school age children. A former public school educator, elementary principal and administrator, she was looking for an opportunity that allowed her to give back to the Lincoln community, but stay involved with children, families and learning. The goal she has established is to build lasting and trusted relationships with families to ensure that the choice you make in a childcare provider is one you can speak highly about and be proud of!
Betsy truly is a lifelong learner, graduating from Doane College with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Middle School Education with an emphasis in language arts and social sciences. She continued to earn her Masters degrees in Curriculum Instruction and Educational Leadership, along with endorsements in Early Childhood, ELL and Reading Specialist. Betsy earned National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) credentials in the area of Literacy and completed her Doctorate of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In her spare time, Betsy volunteers and serves on the board with several organizations that directly benefit children and families within our community.
We look forward to meeting you and learning more about your hopes and dreams for your child’s early childhood experience! Congratulations to our April family of the month, the Muhleisens Family! We are the Muhleisens! Jason, Kayla, Eli and little Emilia. Jason & Kayla are Lincoln Natives who met in college while attending the University of Nebraska. We spent our first 4 years of marriage living in San Diego while Jason attended law school at USD and Kayla worked for a wedding planning company. Although we loved all things California- especially the hiking, camping, the ocean and the perfect weather, we knew that eventually we wanted to move back to Nebraska to raise a family! After moving back to Nebraska, Jason dove into- the world of banking! Jason loves working for his family-owned bank “Union Bank & Trust” as the current Executive Vice President. Kayla is currently a part time event planner but first and foremost a full-time mom. Our precious daughter Emilia is 14 months old and looks forward to attending primrose school very soon. Our clever, sweet, and energetic son Eli has been with Primrose since Day One and absolutely loves learning and exploring with his wonderful teachers and sweetest group of friends in his Preschool class! If you know our family, we love to be on the go and are always up for any kind of outdoor adventure! We love supporting local & of course Cheering on the Huskers. Big NE Basketball fans! You can usually catch us on the weekends feeding the giraffes at the Lincoln Children’s zoo, enjoying a family bike ride, playing at the pool, spending time with family & friends, throwing a dance party in our living room, streaming the latest Disney movie on our tv and usually supporting our favorite local pizza restaurant- Valentinos! WHY PRIMROSE? Well, we like to brag that we have been with primrose from day one!! When I was first pregnant with Eli, I began my search for a school that would be a perfect fit for our family. I had done my research and was so excited to hear that a Primrose was coming to Lincoln. It took ONE meeting with Betsy to know that Primrose was the school for us. We wanted our children to thrive in a school where they could not only be taught life skills but to be given the tools and guidance to accommodate their natural curiosity and also where they could be their authentic selves. If you do not know this already, Primrose’s mission is “to forge a path that leads to a brighter future for ALL CHILDREN.” What stands out the most about Primrose to us? The amazing teachers & staff that work with our child every day. Because not “ALL CHILDREN” are the same. When our son Eli was diagnosed with Autism in the Fall of 2022, we were unsure what Eli’s future would look like and if he would have a place where he would be understood, embraced and celebrated for his unique way of thinking. Eli has been with Primrose since he was 18 months old, to Eli- Primrose is familiar, Primrose is comfort, Primrose is safety, Primrose is family. As a parent, you want the best for your child and there was truly nothing more comforting after Eli’s diagnosis than being reassured that Primrose was still the perfect school for our child to thrive. The amazing support, care, & acceptance that we received from the staff and teachers at Primrose was exactly what we needed. Knowing that Eli can continue to thrive and learn in an environment that is inclusive, accepting, and accommodating to give him the skills to be ready for kindergarten is exactly why we LOVE Primrose and the amazing teachers, the staff, & Dr. Tonniges & Mrs. Schelbitzki! Eli experiences the world in a way that is unique and important, and like all diversity, diversity of the brain enriches the world for the better. Eli’s beautifully different, magical brain teaches us every day to be who you are with no apologies. And we are so grateful that Primrose allows Eli to be unapologetically authentic while giving him the skills and tools to be ready for his next adventure in life! We are so proud to be chosen as the family of the month during the month of April because April is World Autism Month. Autism awareness & Acceptance means understanding, embracing, and celebrating unique ways of thinking and strengths of all humans. We all have individual skills, attributes, and characteristics that are unique to all of us that should be celebrated and accepted every day! Thank you to the wonderful teachers and staff at primrose and Happy World Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month!
Our new exclusive Harmony & Heart® program integrates our proprietary music and books in a variety of thoughtful ways each day. Through learning about music, while simultaneously being exposed to concepts in math, language, and character development, your child will grow as a musician, a student, and a person.
At Primrose Schools® Summer Adventure Club, learning meets fun through hands-on activities—like sports, robotics, and more—that encourage creativity, compassion and resourcefulness.

There’s no question that parents want their preschoolers to grasp the basics of colors, numbers and letters to foster a lifetime of learning.
90% of a child’s brain develops in the first five years.
It might seem odd to think about your preschooler exploring data analysis and algebra.
Our Primrose 360Connect™ email delivers daily peace of mind and engagement in your child’s learning experience. As a Primrose parent, you’ll receive an update on your child’s activities, naps, meals and milestones. We also include photos so you can see what a great day your child is having.
