Brad and Colleen met in St. Louis through a mutual friend. Brad creates aeronautical maps for pilots, and Colleen is an engineer on the F-18 Super Hornet. She somehow convinced Brad to leave his beloved St. Louis Cardinals and move back to her home town of Denver. After getting married and settling down, they decided life was just too easy and they needed a munchkin. Colleen never does things the easy way though, and getting pregnant was no different. It took 4 years, and a round of donor-egg IVF before they could finally announce that Macree was on his way! But, to carry on this fine family tradition, Mac wasn't going easy on his soon-to-be parents. They learned he would have a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, which means that only half his heart works. Thirty years ago, kids with these kinds of heart defects lived at most a week or two. Today, through true miracles of modern medicine (and three open heart surgeries before he turns three), Mac looks and acts just like any other kid his age. His name, Macree Ryan, means "My little heart king" in Irish, and he lives up to it every day!
When Mac was healthy enough to attend a 'regular' daycare, Rick, Ashley and his teachers took everything in stride. They were even willing to deal with the g-tube and feeding pump if need be! Mac has flourished surrounded by kids his age and his teachers. Can't beat that 'peer pressure' when it comes to eating, sleeping and socialization skills! Don't want to eat for Mom and Dad? No problem - we know you eat well 5 days a week at school, so you'll last the weekend!
Always gluttons for punishment, Colleen and Brad decided that Mac was just so wonderful that they wanted another one. Another embryo transfer and, surprise! It's Buy-One-Get-One free this time! They're excited (terrified?) to be expecting twins this August. Colleen and Brad are now just hoping they can survive until the twins are ready to go to Primrose too!
