Information Read Across America Day

Read Across America week is center around Theodor Geisel’s, better known, as Dr. Seuss, birthday – March 2. Before Dr. Seuss started publishing books with brightly colored pages, silly stories, and memorable characters that explicitly appealed to children, the concept of children’s literature was virtually nonexistent. At the time Dr. Seuss began publishing children’s books were either loaded with morals or were primers geared toward teaching children to read – neither made for very fun reading. Dr. Seuss revolutionized the way that we think about children’s books and the way that we teach children to love reading. Because of his contributions we celebrate reading and children’s literacy during the week of his birthday. As we celebrate this week we have lots of fun things planned for the children including special crafts, Pete the Cat spirit days, and the teachers read aloud to the children everyday a Pete the Cat book.
