Engage Your Senses with These Activities

Children love to explore the world using their senses. Here are two fun kitchen activities that encourage sensory learning!

Cloud Doughsensory activity cloud dough


  • 8 parts flour
  • 1 part oil (canola or olive)
  • Large bowl
  • Spoon
  • Optional: cookie cutters or play molds


  • Ask your child to help measure the flour and oil. Use the spoon to mix the ingredients together in a bowl.
  • Spread the dough onto a flat surface.
  • Encourage your child to mold, touch and shape the dough. Ask her questions about the texture of the dough and her creations!

Colorful Mystery Messhow to make mystery mess sensory activities


  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 5 drops of food coloring (2-4 different colors)
  • Large bowl
  • Spoon


  • Ask your child to help measure cornstarch and water into a bowl.
  • Have your child mix the two ingredients together, then add 5 drops of differently-colored food coloring into the mix.
  • Ask your child to gently mix the food coloring, then discuss the texture and the colors in the mix. Ask your child if she thinks it’s a solid or a liquid.
