Literacy: Why it Matters?
The first five years of life are the most critical for learning because that's when children are able to form the most synapses, or connections between brain cells. Synapses that are used infrequently begin to prune, or delete, themselves from age 6 to puberty. Sharing story time with your child from infancy is crucial to his success because it helps him form those important brain connections. The best way to do this is by reading with your child, not just to him. Enjoy this short video for tips on how best to read with your child to support his brain development.
Primrose Schools, Reach Out and Read® and Scholastic recognize the importance of teaching children to learn and love to read. We encourage you to join Scholastic’s global literacy campaign, “Read Every Day. Lead a Better Life.”, which supports every child’s right to read and be successful in school and life.
Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based nonprofit organization of medical providers who promote early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. A donation to Reach Out and Read will go directly to the most in need and underserved children across the country to gain access to books. Click here to make a difference today in the life of a child.
