Students host “election” at their school, choose a presidential snack of the day
Buford – As a historic Election Day draws near, more than 35 preschoolers at the Primrose School of Buford received a lesson Wednesday morning from two state lawmakers about how democracy works and the importance of voting.
State Senator Renee S. Unterman and State Rep. Bobby Reese read the kindergarten and preschool students the children’s book, Duck for President. The students then voted for which Primrose character should be president, choosing Percy the Rooster over Billy the Duck. The children also cast ballots for a Presidential Snack of the Day, with the majority picking bananas and yogurt rather than pretzels and cheese.
Representative Reese handed out ballots and checked student IDs the school had made for the event, while Sen. Unterman passed out “I Voted” stickers and high fives as each child exited the school’s “voting booth”. The children also recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang “America the Beautiful,” while waving voting signs and handmade American flags.
The Primrose School of Buford and Primrose Schools across the country created this election event to help teach young children about how democracy works and the importance of voting. In a week when Georgia voters can start casting ballots and the presidential candidates will meet for their first debates, Primrose parents also received tips for talking to their children about the election. Recommendations included: taking children with their parentsto vote; posing an election question to children, such as asking them to vote on a favorite color or favorite meal; and encouraging children to write a letter to a winning candidate about what the child would like to see in the coming years.
